Chapter Thirteen

Blaze

Chad is driving dangerously fast to get us to my aunt’s house. The tires have squealed more than I want to think about and those lights were a lot more red than pink as he sailed through them. Matthew is right on his tail, so close I worry about what is going to happen when he stops. Another turn, my hands gripping the seat with everything I’ve got. Why is it so hot in here? My fire is quiet, calm even. Like a steady flame on a candle. Sweat is beading under my shirt, on my lip. My hands are slick with it. Chad slings the car into a gravel drive and slides to a stop in front of a house. The house looks old and big, but I’ve no time to stare as Chad is at my door, helping me out of the car and walking me into Aunt Ell’s house. He opens the door without knocking and she turns in surprise. Her eyes land on me and she says, “Bring her this way.”

We walk forever down a hall. So much wood here. This place scares me. What if the fire escapes here? This place would burn so fast. So many smells here. He guides me into a room where Aunt Ell is waiting. He leads me to a circle drawn on the floor. “Stand in here. It will be all right. I promise. Aunt Ell will help you through this. She guides us all through. Just trust her and work with her, ok?”

I nod, sweat dripping down my face at the motion. In the distance, I hear the door close. Ell’s voice finds my ear through the haze. “Breathe with me. In one, two, three. Out one, two, three, four. She’s there, inside. Look at her. She needs to be one with you. All you must do is accept her. Can you see her, Blaze?” Her voice weaves through my mind, calming me as I try to see inside. I find myself in the dark, a white wolf sitting across from me. She is emaciated, her fur dirty and unkempt. She is slumped forward a little, as though she is exhausted from a battle. I want nothing more in this moment than to comfort this sweet wolf. Extending my hand to her, I pause as she growls. “I won’t hurt you. I didn’t know what they had done. And I didn’t know you existed until today. I promise, I just want to help.”

Help? Will you become one with me? Join as we should have so long ago when the witch locked me in the box?

“The witch? My Grandmother did this to us? It was when I was sent there after my room caught fire, wasn’t it?” The wolf nods, fumbling a little to stay upright.

If the fire hadn’t set me free, I wouldn’t be alive much longer. If we don’t join, I probably won’t be anyway, but at least I will die free of that hateful box.

“I will join with you.
